Sweden Formally Adopts New Gambling Legislation
Gambling legislation passed in the Swedish Parliament on 7 June will introduce a number of key changes to the online gambling sector in Sweden.
This main aim of this legislation, entitled “A re-regulated gambling market”, is to combat the country’s unregulated online gaming activity that has become an increasing concern for the government in Sweden. The new law will therefore establish a new regulatory framework, based primarily on a rigorous licencing system, which will provide a sound environment for the further, regulated growth of the sector. The legislation also introduces an 18 per cent tax rate for online gaming operators as well as a number of mandatory measures to protect gambling customers.
According to the law in Sweden, licensing regime will come into force on January 1, 2019 although licence applications will be accepted from August 1, 2018.
More details on this important development will be provided as further information emerges.
