Navigating the MGA’s Evolving Audit Landscape
The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) continues to raise the bar for regulatory oversight, as outlined in its 2024 Annual Report. Recent updates to the System Audit, Review, and Compliance Audit procedures mark a significant shift in how the Authority expects licensees and external auditors to approach compliance. The focus is now firmly on depth, documentation, and proactive remediation, a clear signal to iGaming operators that robust internal controls and audit readiness are no longer optional.
Meeting Higher MGA Audit Expectations
In 2024, the MGA conducted 13 compliance audits, placing “greater emphasis” on the quality and evidential basis of audit reports. The Authority has also increased its scrutiny of both auditors and licensees, demanding more detailed documentation and clarification throughout the process.
In its most recent guidance, the MGA outlined new expectations for external auditors, including the need to:
- Identify and report non-compliances to the licensee;
- Assess how issues are resolved during the audit period;
- Re-audit findings and classify them as ‘Resolved at Audit Stage’ where applicable;
- Mark unresolved issues as ‘Partially Compliant’ and require a rectification plan;
- Support licensees in requesting deadline extensions for resolution and re-audit.
This evolution reflects the MGA’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and regulatory excellence in Malta’s iGaming sector.
