Collective Investment Schemes in Malta
Collective Investment Schemes (“CISs”) are schemes or arrangements with the main objective of collecting capital for the purpose of investment and are divided into units which may be subscribed to, sold or exchanged.
Funds may be classified in different means, with one key indicator being the type of clientele it targets. Retail funds are subject to more regulatory scrutiny and obligations due to the added investor protection needed when compared to professional investors or eligible counter-parties. Moreover, any hedge fund targeting the retail market, either through a UCITS Scheme or through a Retail-AIF are subject to certain investment restrictions as brought about by the respective
Directives and the Maltese Investment Services Rule Books.
